Toulouse has been awarded the title « European City of Science » for 2018.
This signals an entire year in which – more than ever before! – it will share its passion for science and innovation with the public.
European City of Science in 2018
In 2018, Toulouse will be under the spotlight of the European science industry. Following on from Stockholm, Munich, Barcelona, Turin, Dublin, Copenhagen and Manchester, the city was chosen to host the European Science Forum (ESOF) this summer. This constitutes the largest interdisciplinary gathering in Europe devoted to science and innovation, and to their role in society. Established by the Euroscience1 association and held every two years, this prestigious forum – it regularly brings together no fewer than 4,000 professionals – also provides the host city with the sought-after title of « European City of Science ». Acting as a catalyst, it allows the host city to stage multiple specialist and general public events aimed at sharing scientific knowledge and understanding with as many people as possible.
Sharing knowledge, Toulouse knows how to get things done and has even raised this practice to the status of local cultural tradition. The city, boasting a long academic history that was already so well-renowned in the XVI Century it was the subject of a proverb (see opposite), is home to one of the oldest universities in France (1229) and an exceptional scientific and technical ecosystem. Reputed around the world for its space and aeronautics industries and its cutting edge research laboratories in a diverse range of fields (health, on-board systems, biotech, intelligent systems, etc.), it is equipped with a significant community of researchers, engineers, students and a general population that is curious about scientific culture. Targeting its own inhabitants, young and old alike, but also those from the wider region and passing visitors, Toulouse is developing the number of venues focused on spreading knowledge, such as Le Muséum, the Quai des Savoirs or the Cité de l’Espace. Knowledgeable, innovative and vibrant, the city has everything it requires to wear its title as « European City of Science 2018 » with pride.
In step with science
Hosted for the very first time in France, ESOF could not have found a more enthusiastic home. On the programme for this year: conferences and debates, demonstrations, festive events, exhibitions, workshops, etc. In order to host events aimed at the general public, the usual venues that focus on scientific culture, such as Le Muséum, the Quai des Savoirs, the Cité de l’Espace and Aeroscopia, have been mobilised and other sites have exceptionally opened their doors to science, like the Augustins Museum or the Sorano Theatre, whilst professional gatherings will take place at the Pierre-Baudis Conference Centre, the Palais des Sports, Toulouse Business School and the University of Toulouse-Capitole (UT1). The high point of this exceptional year will be the Science in the City Festival, the general public event of the ESOF Congress (see the calendar opposite) that will allow the people of Toulouse to meet researchers from around the world and discover innovations that are « Made in Toulouse ». It is a wonderful way to honour the motto of the 2018 edition of ESOF: « Sharing Science: towards new horizons ».
